Feng shui, translated as “wind-water” and pronounced as “fung shway”, is the ancient Chinese principle of creating a harmonious interaction of energies and the earth, fire, wood, water, and metal elements.
With feng shui, you can bring about balance, harmony, and comfort into your home environment. More so, you can improve the conditions of success in your life. So, to get started in creating a harmonious and restful atmosphere in your bedroom, follow the basic feng shui bedroom principles below:
1. Observe the following bedroom layouts.
Because the bed is the largest furniture in your bedroom, its position and placement is the most important thing to consider. According to Know Feng Shui, there are three good feng shui bedroom layouts to consider.
Also known as the “commanding” position, this feng shui bedroom layout shows a bed positioned diagonally from the door of the bedroom and has a solid wall supporting the bed’s headboard.
In this layout, there also has to be furniture to ground and support the bed on both sides (i.e., bedside tables) for balance. Also, the other large furniture is to be placed at the foot of the bed.
A rug should also be placed underneath to ground the energy of the whole bedroom.
The second bedroom layout has the door on the same wall as the headboard of the bed. But, you need to take note of leaving ample space for the nightstand that grounds your bed. The bed always has to be grounded and protected.
The positioning of the bed, nightstands, and rug in this layout is almost the same as the layout in the “commanding” position. The location of the windows and door is the only thing that makes it a bit different.
The second largest furniture next to the bed has to be located at its foot.
This third bedroom layout has the door stationed on the same wall as the side of the bed. However, there should be enough space so the bed will still be located far away from the door.
The door can either be at the farther left or right from the bed.
Additional note: In feng shui, the door should never be located directly at the foot of the bed as this position makes the feet point directly towards the door. And, this is regarded as the “coffin” or “death” position.
2. Have your room painted with warm skin tones.
Feng shui experts recommend painting the bedroom with either natural or soothing colors such as warm skin tones, cocoa, cream, beige, cream, and any color from ivory to dark browns. Your color choices should promote a restful bedroom experience. Soft colors, blues, and greens are also great choices.
3. Learn to modulate your bedroom’s lighting.
Lighting significantly affects a bedroom’s atmosphere. So, to create a pleasant and warm ambiance in the bedroom, you must use lighting fixtures that produce warm lights. Or, better yet, use lighting fixtures that can be modulated such as those with a dimmer switch or knob. A candlelight can also be an option.
At day time, take advantage of the natural light as possible. To modulate natural lighting, you can use sheer or light-colored curtains. A properly lit bedroom, no matter what time of the day it is, will always attract positive energy.
4. Avoid having mirrors in your bedroom.
According to feng shui, mirrors in the bedroom should be avoided. However, if you already have one in yours, you must use it with discretion. A mirror shouldn’t be placed in a way that you can see your reflection of yourself lying in bed. It must be covered instead. Some believe that mirrors can disrupt a goodnight’s sleep and result in astral travels.
More so, it shouldn’t be positioned in front of the bed especially when you’re in a relationship. According to feng shui experts, positioning the mirror this way can invite and attract a third party into your relationship or marriage. And, it may result in infidelity.
As much as possible, just relocate the mirror and keep them away from your bed. Make sure also that the mirror won’t reflect your bed.
5. De-clutter and keep your things organized.
In feng shui, a cluttered bedroom can result to a cluttered mind. Besides the fact that it can disrupt your sleep, it can also prevent chi (life force) from flowing in your bedroom freely. So, always make sure that your bedroom’s as organized and tidy as much as possible. But, if you’re a really messy person, at least keep your mess out of sight.
6. Keep electronics out of your bedroom.
The bedroom’s purpose must be solely for sleep, romance, and relaxation. So, it’s highly advised to remove any work-related items in your bedroom and placed elsewhere. These items include electronics such as computers, laptops, television, etc. Feng shui experts believe that electronics have no place in the bedroom. These items need to be kept out.
Electronics add up to the electrical currents inside the bedroom. And, they often cause sleep disruption. So, to keep the restful atmosphere and energy in your bedroom, you better keep these items out of your private chamber. If not, better keep them hidden in a cabinet, drawer, etc. Just make sure they are out of sight especially when it’s time to rest.
7. Stay away from water-related artworks.
Water-related images, artworks, and features may be beneficial for offices, restaurants, banks, or hotels, but not for the bedroom. Water kills fire. And, the bedroom as the room for sleep, relaxation, and romance, water can kill the fire that symbolizes passion which is essential for love relationships. It can cool down passion and result in couple arguments.
Water-related features in the bedroom may also cause different types of loss such as financial loss, robbery, etc. So, make sure to keep the water element away from your bedroom – may it be artworks, features, images, and even aquariums. Also, water scenes and features in a bedroom can attract too much yang energy and lead to a restless sleep.
8. Avoid furniture with sharp or pointed edges.
In feng shui, furniture items with sharp edges are perceived to emulate a “pointed” or negative energy that isn’t good for the bedroom. So, if possible, choose furniture pieces that have soft, rounded, or curved edges instead.
Round-edged furniture pieces are thought to stimulate a gentle and soothing type of chi which is more beneficial for your bedroom.
